Scottish LionExercise Scottish Lion has readied 45 Commando RM, based at Arbroath for front line duty assuming the role of ‘lead commando group’ – which means they are at short notice to deploy around the world should the Government need to call on their services.    Fresh from taking part in the biggest “war games” in Europe this year, (Exercise Joint Warrior), the Marines of 45 Commando RM immediately participated in Exercise Scottish Lion which saw the entire unit – more than 750 troops – put ashore south of Stranraer.    Exercise Scottish Lion ranged from the ranges of West Freugh (in the west) to the ruins Edingham Castle (near Dalbeattie), more than 40 miles to the East.   The landing group comprised the Helicopter Carrier ILLUSTRIOUS, Assault Ship BULWARK and Landing Ship RFA MOUNTS BAY.   Units of the Commando Air Wing were of course involved as were RAF CHINOOKs flying from the decks of the ILLUSTRIOUS.   Some thirteen separate Company level operations, six helicopter assaults and a move over land of some 60 miles, ensured that 45 Commando RM can be considered in all respected “ready”.
