Fire at Antarctic Base - a ferocious fire through the Ferraz research station, a Brazilian research base on King George Island in the South Shetland Islands.    Assistance was sought and given by fire crew from the Ice Patrol Ship PROTECTOR.   Two dozen crew from the PROTECTOR helped fight the blaze for four hours, which had engulfed the research station, and which sadly claimed the lives of two Brazilian staff at the station.    PROTECTOR had arrived on the scene arrived after the survivors - mainly Brazilian military and scientific personnel - had been evacuated and set about extinguishing the fire which was still raging.   The PROTECTOR used the ship's small boats to land vehicles and equipment, whilst the work boat TERRA NOVA landed a quad bike and trailer so portable pumping and fire fighting equipment could be moved around the base.
