Hard Worked SOMERSET - The Type 23 Frigate SOMERSET returned to Devonport following a six-month counter piracy mission East of Suez” predominantly been working under Combined Maritime Forces as part of a task force which patrols the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Oman, with port visits in Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania and the Seychelles.  Originally designed for the principal task of anti-submarine warfare, these Type 23 Frigates have evolved into multi-purpose ships able to conduct warfare roles including embargo operations using boarding teams, disaster relief work and surveillance.    The SOMERSET is due to undergo a lengthy in depth refit as the ship has “deployed” four times (for six months tours) in the past five years.
