FASLANE Ship Lift 100 – the 16,000 tonne Ship Lift at the Faslane Naval Base on the Clyde has raised its 100th vessel since commissioning nineteen years ago. The Ship Lift has raised ships the size of Sandown Class Minecountermeasure Vessels up to VANGUARD Class Strategic Submarines. Designed over five years in the 1980s, and built 1990-1993 the Ship Lift entering service in 1994.
Housed in a 610 ft. (186m) long covered dock it has a width of 170 ft (52m) wide (170ft) and some 147 ft, (45m) high the ship lift is constructed of reinforced concrete supported by piles driven into the bedrock using a proven ‘Syncrolift’ lifting system, consisting of a steel platform operated by 96 hoists and associated cables. It cannot be towed away should the Faslane Naval Base be closed to VANGUARD Class Strategic Submarines.
